My name is Vitaliy, I'm 31, and I was born here. I've worked in a train depot as a locomotive operator for 10 years.
So you've been to many places.
Yeah, I drive from Kem' to Olenegorsk, soon I'll be driving to Murmansk. I've been working
there for 10 years, 4 of them as a locomotive operator. I've been into photography for about 2 years, walking with a camera is the best way to relax for me.
Do you take your camera on your trips?
No, I don't, but I always have it with me when I'm not working.
Could you tell something about the town?
Our town is located near the White Sea, it's a really beautiful place. It's great to live near the coast and go for walks here, but I only discovered some places when I got a dog. I hadn't used to go anywhere before that. Now that I have a dog I take him out somewhere distant and discover beautiful sites. I take photos of people and landscapes, and if I know there's going to be a picturesque sunrise or a sunset, I grab the dog, jump into the car and go somewhere, to the woods for example.
Do you take photos of your dog?
Yeah, I do. My dog is very photogenic. I try to look for more places, for example last summer I drove to Kuzomen' for the first time.
Is it far from here?
Yeah, it is, I couldn't drive close to it in my car because I'd need a big jeep to get there. The
landscape is just amazing there. I'd never have thought we had such places here.
Is this place convenient for photo trips?
It isn't very convenient because you can't get everywhere by car.
What about seasonal trips?
Well, in winter you will definitely not get anywhere, you'd need a snow mobile at least. And in summer people come here from Moscow in big jeeps. When I came to Kuzomen' last summer, I was amazed by the number of cars driving there, I'd never have thought this place was so popular. It's a desert in fact.
A desert?
Yeah, first you drive through the woods and then you come to the sea coast and there's just sand and wild horses running around. It's a desert with no villages except Kuzomen', but you can't get there except in a big car, or by helicopter, or by boat.
For a photographer these are wonderful unexplored territories…
Yeah, but I never got there because my car wasn't big enough. Teriberka too. I haven't been there with a camera yet. I mean I've been there, but I didn't have a camera back then. So the camera is your creative instrument that allows you to explore the familiar places anew. Two weeks ago I was on the opposite bank photographing the stars, and I had an idea, what if I make a specular reflection of the photo? So I did it and it turned out as a completely different landscape, and I thought to myself, is this the place where I've lived for 30 years? I merely made a specular reflection and it became totally different.
Can one write to you on Instagram to buy a photo or invite you to a project?
Yes, of course.
