My name is Leonid, I'm from Monchegorsk, the Murmansk region.
Where are we now?
We are at the centre of active recreation, in one of its parts which is a public space, it's named Pribrezhnoye.
What can you do here?
The goal of creating such a place was to realize creative initiatives, not the owners' but those of the town residents and guests. It's an open space to realize any creative beginning, and of course it's free of charge.
How can one get here? If I have a project, if I'm an artist, what can I do to make you like me and realize it here?
To get here you only have to do what you have done today – call us, tell us about yourself and what you want to do, and we'll figure something out.
I see. What opportunities can you provide for a creative project? Can one show a play here, for example?
Well, if there is enough room to stage a play, why not? We've had quite a lot of events here, as for those with a lot of spectators, we've had two music sessions here with about 50 people who came to see them. As for concerts, the band Sokhach from Monchegorsk celebrated their anniversary here, there's a show bill on the wall.
What about an art show?
It can easily be done, if the place suits you. You can organize an art show, or a concert, or a drama class, or any classes, no problem.
That's cool. What do you have here apart from this room?
We have a rental centre.
What can one rent here?
Well, in summer you can rent electroscooters and other electronic gear like motorbikes, go-carts, electrocars for kids, or bicycles and boats of course, because we're located on the shore of Lake Lumbolka, so you can rent a boat or a double canoe, and the specialty of our rental centre, you won't find it anywhere in the Murmansk region except here, is summer tube sledging.
How can it be?
There's this specialized material named snowplast, so you get on a sledge and slide, the speed is the same.
Slide into the lake?
No, of course not, you slide down a curved track and then you stop. As for winter, its tube
sledging of course, or double tubing, which you won't find anywhere. We have a ski lift so you don't have to drag your tired kid or your sledge uphill. We have snowmobiles for adults and kids, a banana boat and a zorb. We also have a café, it works all year round, where you can rest and share your emotions and talk over a cup of tea or coffee. We have an annual festival, well, it's like, it took place last year and then the pandemic came, but we'll make it anyway. There's skiing in swimsuits, isn't there? And our key product is tube sledging. It's called Norbeach Party, it is a winter beach on the lakeshore, there's snow everywhere, people wearing swimsuits, surfing, selling corn, relaxing on sunbeds, so it's a kind of northern beach. Unfortunately we didn't have it this year, but you can do anything if you have time and purpose. Actually there didn't use to be anything here, no lighting, no paved paths, no stage, a dirty toilet, not a nice kind of place, you wouldn't call it the town's central park. Now there's the Health path, lighting, the people started coming and it became a place of attraction, a safer place where families come. And now we cannot open the place due to the pandemic and the absence of ice and snow and the people keep coming and calling to ask when we'll be open and get upset because we're still closed.
Our centre of active recreation was actually built in a former public toilet.
How did it happen? You saw the building and…?
Well, we attended a course at the Social Enterprise Academy organized by Nornickel where business coaches taught us to do business, explained how to make business projects, and as a result the company provided an interest-free loan. So we looked at this building, I don't even remember how we got this idea, the building was dilapidated, the snow was waist-deep on the slope. People keep asking, why can't we ski or sledge here, we've done this before. Well, no one ever skied here, except me and my classmates when we had PE classes here, but no one ever skis here anymore. So the building dates back to 1939 or may be 1969, it's very old. I've been here since 2002 and I never saw the public toilet really working, there were no lamps or running water, but people used it anyway. So we added a superstructure, and now we're on the roof of this building, so this used to be the roof and we built it up to create this room. There used to be just bare walls and concrete floor, then we decorated it properly. So this place was created as part of
the program, a competition of socially oriented projects, we received a grant and realized it. So let's go and have a look around. So this is the café, all these decorations and designs were created by my wife, everything we
could make we made ourselves.
We had some events as we realized the project, there was a chamotte clay modeling workshop with a teacher, this one is a light installation. When we have a cinema club we watch films and then have a discussion. People keep coming to the film shows and the concerts.
How do you invite people?
We do it via emails and social networks, or corporate networks, as well as the local media.
