My name is Anastasiya Knyazeva, and I work in the local history museum of the town of
Polyarniy.
Tell us about this museum, please.
Well, naturally it is about the history of the town, it is quite traditional. Like in many other Russian museums, the main exhibition is divided into historical periods, it tells about the archaeology and the nature of the Murmansk region. The topic of the Pomors, of course, we can't but touch upon it, although the Pomors didn't live in the area, they used the Yekaterininskaya Harbour when they developed the Barents Sea fleet. Of course we have a hall dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War, because during the war Polyarniy was the Northern Fleet capital, and the Northern Fleet originated in our town. And naturally part of the exhibition tells about the modern, post-war history, about the life in the town in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It is about the town as a naval base and a garrison. All in all, it's quite traditional.
And your art projects?..
Yes, we do quite a lot of projects, it started not so long ago, may be 2 years ago. It all began when we won a presidential grant and we got caught up in this topic. Lately we have been dealing with young people a lot, we got to know you and we came to Nikel to look at how museums involved teenagers in their work. This problem exists and we have begun working on it. Our first museum project was realized last November, it's called the Time Code, and in this project teenagers talked to elderly people and then created 5 short films about the town history and 2 audio guides, one was made by the teenagers themselves and the other by the long-time residents, based on their memories. Now we are starting a new project, the Yekaterininskiy Art Boat, it is supported by the Potanin Fund. As the winner of the Personal Philanthropy and Altruism Practice competition I
suggested this project to the museum. The four teenagers who had participated in the Time Code came to the new project, and this goes to show that our museum is becoming more interesting, it has begun doing projects involving teenagers, and the teachers no longer have to take their students to the museum because the students come themselves. We have already made up a group of teenagers, but others keep asking if they can participate too. And I think we should definitely carry on with the project we started with Mariya, because the demand is quite great.
How can one suggest one's art or historical project to the museum?
Well, it's quite simple really, you can find us in the social networks or go to our website for the contacts. We exhibit various artists, for free, they only have to bring their art works to the town. The artists can also be present at the art openings, although it's a closed town and you have to acquire a pass a month in advance. You can come to our town to organize an art show or simply have a look at the town and the museum.
Is there any demand for new projects from the east?
Of course the museum needs them, although projects can be different, but we are always open to something bright and new and exciting, always ready to participate.
Thank you.
