Moscow Modular Villa
Project: MMV-1 — Moscow Modular Villa
Architect: Inessa Garder
Project Year: 2021
Location: Moscow
MMV-1 is a conceptual investigation into modular residential architecture as a spatial and cultural system. Conceived as a private villa, the project explores how prefabricated construction can support spatial fluidity, adaptability, and a refined domestic experience.
The house is organised through a modular framework that allows flexibility without compromising architectural coherence. The project uses modules as compositional elements - that define proportions, circulation, and visual relationships between spaces. This approach results in a structure that remains legible as a single volume while accommodating different modes of living.
MMV-1 Spatial diagram and sketches
Spatially, the villa is structured around the intersection of two primary zones: an open, double-height living area oriented towards the landscape, and a more introverted studio volume intended for focused work and small gatherings. The relationship between these zones creates a dynamic sequence of spaces, balancing openness and privacy.
MMV-1 Ground floor plan
The project draws conceptual inspiration from early modernist abstract compositions, particularly the spatial logic of El Lissitzky’s Proun works. These references inform the organisation of planes and volumes, translated into a three-dimensional architectural language where solids and voids interact to generate depth and movement.

The project draws conceptual inspiration from early modernist abstract compositions, particularly the spatial logic of El Lissitzky’s Proun works. These references inform the organisation of planes and volumes, translated into a three-dimensional architectural language where solids and voids interact to generate depth and movement.
Material choices are intentionally restrained, emphasising clarity and structure over ornament. Timber surfaces, large glazed openings, and a limited interior palette reinforce the connection between architecture and environment, while supporting the logic of modular construction.
MMV-1 proposes a contemporary model of living in which modular architecture is not reduced to efficiency alone, and becomes a framework for spatial expression, adaptability, rhythm, and cultural identity.
