Depicting a human being is one of the oldest practices in visual art. History of art demonstrates us that interest in creating images with humans in them was even in the prehistoric period. Every time period gave its own Ancient Roman gave our civilization a vivid interest in portraying people. This interest remains until now.
Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Lucian Freud, and many other artists demonstrate how different one's approach can be inside of a single genre…
Today's emerging artists also do not hesitate to work with portraits. Marina Melnik is one of them. Her practice is focused on digital collages with Warholesque aesthetics in them. Shallow space, conceptual style, and violent dense colors highlight the artist among her colleagues. Her choice of models requires special attention – all of them are the same type, hence Melnik creates one long-lasting series of digital collage portrait simulacrums similar to Jasper Johns' paintings of American flags.
Her models have no emotions, but the background of almost all images is jazzy. Each image has a reference to one of the 20th century Art classics like László Moholy-Nagy, Raoul Hausmann, and others. Even though Melnik is at the beginning of her artistic career, we already see a talented recognizable style. This fact makes us believe that the artist may develop into something fascinating in the future.
